A BRIEF HISTORY OF AROX

St. Xavier's College, Ranchi was celebrating its Golden Jubilee in 1994. I was Manager at Bank of India, Church Road Branch. I was approached by the then Principal of the College, Rev. Fr. Gilbert D'souza, s.j. & Prof. Terrence O'Brien (Deptt. of English) to collect funds for·the jubilee celebrations mainly from the ex-students. I suggested to have one day's programme for the passed out students & the idea of formation of an Association was mooted.

June 5th, 1994 was the day for the alumni/nae of the college. I talked to many alumni/nae & they were too willing to contribute funds & to participate. Many alumni/nae were contacted and we had a grand celebration & a grand dinner about 700 members ex-students from Ranchi, Kolkata, Jamshedpur, Delhi, Mumbai & some other places attended.

On 6th June, 1994 we had a meeting of alumni/nae of the college in St. John's hall. The attendance was very good about 200 ex-students were present. It was decided to form an alumni association and the work was allotted to an Ad-hoc Committee. The following members were selected in the Ad-hoc Committee.

The Ad-hoc Committee drafted a Memorandum of Association & Rules & Regulations. They started membership drive also. A General Body Meeting was called· in February, 1995. The Rules & Regulations were approved. Election was held for the first Governing Body. Shri Suprabhat Das, IPS was the returning officer. Many candidates for the post, however, Shri Das conducted the process very nicely and the following members were elected.

    • Beside Shri Prabal, Shri Rajesh Tekriwal, Shri Prem Mittal and Shri Sudhir Uggal held the post of the General Secretary of the Association.

    The meeting of the Central Zone was hosted by AROX at HPDC, Purulia

    • ► The papers for registration were sent to IG Registration, Patna.
    • ► Shri Prabal was selected to attend a meet of WUJA at Australia. Since the visa was issued on the day of the meet he did not attend.
    • ► The activities were divided into several categories like interaction with the present students, interaction with the teaching staff, activities for giving back to the society, the plantation programme that started in 1994 lasted till 2022 and activities for the members of the Association. Village Tango in Tupudana was adopted by the Association for overall growth for two years. Ladies were trained for nursing, gents for motor driving, a club­cum-library was started for the youth of the village. In many activities the students of the college were also involved. Blood donation camps were regular feature.
    • ► Every year in December we had annual gathering of alumni/ae in college campus.
    • Four Patrons were selected for every term. All the patrons were alumni/ae. The following were patrons at different times:

    Facilities given by the College to AROX and its members :

    • College collected Rs. 30/- from all the students who were taking TC. This fund was meant for AROX The ward of AROX members who wanted admission in the college were given preference and the cut off marks for them was 3% less than others.

    • AROX was given a well furnished office with computer in the college building.
